Christmas is around the corner! Now is a good time to start thinking about Christmas decorations. One great idea is to force Amaryllis bulbs. They are very easy to force and easy to find right now. I've seen nice packages at Wal-Mart and Target for reasonable prices. They come in beautiful colors such as red and white and look beautiful with Christmas decorations.
Speaking of Christmas....if you have a poinsettia left over from last year it needs to be given a short day with long night exposure. Start now and do this for 2-3 weeks to have red blossoms by Christmas.
Fall is a good time to get ready for next year's gardening season. Large perennials should be divided to promote blooming next season. This is a good time to decide what looked good and what didn't work so you can make some changes! Don't forget to plant spring-flowering bulbs!
If you live in the south, this is a good time to plant pansies and violas, which will often last all winter long. Mums also provide beautiful fall color but you may want to protect them if they are newly planted because they need time to get their roots well established to last through the winter.
Water with freezing temperatures can ruin terra cotta pots. If you have clay pots that you would like to keep outside raise them up off of the ground so that water drains away from it. Now open! HerGardenWeb Come enter our Grand Opening Contest
