Master the art of language and master your world! When was the last time you gave any thought to your language?
Your thoughts lead to words, words lead to action and action leads to results. Are you experiencing all of the results you desire in your business? If not, read on.
Several years ago I had the opportunity to really evaluate my language. It was pointed out to me that my language could be a very good indicator as to why my business and my life was not where I truly desired to be. At first I refused to believe that my language could have that much of an effect on my results, income results and personal results as well. I fought the concept until I really began to pay attention to my words and indeed, my every thought. Soon it became apparent to me that thoughts, words, actions and results did in fact go, “hand in hand.”
Below I have listed a few samples of words for you to review and I know that you will come to the same conclusion that I came to…words are so powerful! Listen to a person’s words and literally hear their thoughts behind the words then…look for the obvious result of the words.
Maybe Definite
Try Will
Hope Committed
Problem Challenge
I wish I am
Help Assist
Need Deserve
Let’s address each of these words individually:
When someone tells you, “maybe” what is your immediate response to that word? Maybe is a word of little substance because the thought that led to the person saying; “maybe” was a thought of non-commitment and disbelief. Many people will use the word maybe as a buffer or stall word because they do not want to tell you, “no” or they are unwilling to commit fully to whatever it is you are asking them to commit to.
On the flip side of maybe is the word, “definite.” When you ask a person the same type of a question and you receive the word, “definite” as a response…how do you feel? Definite is a word of power, a forward motion and a word of positive action. Definite is an affirmative, yes! There is no misunderstanding the word or thoughts behind the word, definite.
How about the word, try? When you ask an associate or colleague to perform a certain task and their response is, “I’ll try.” What are they really telling you? Are they really saying, “no” or “I’ll go through the motions but my heart’s not into it?” Try is a very weak and nonproductive word. Will is a word spoken as a bi product of a powerful thought and willingness or belief in achievement. Would you rather have someone on your team who tries or someone who will get the job done?
The word hope can be a bit confusing. Many people mistakenly believe the word hope is a word of empowerment and it really isn’t at all. For example, if I told you…”I hope to achieve top ranking in this months sales contest” what would you think? Do you believe without a shadow of a doubt that I will achieve my goal? What if I were to say to you, “ I am absolutely committed to achieving top ranking in this months sales contest.” When you hear the word committed, you know I mean business! Committed is a no-nonsense type of word and the thought that produced the word committed is similar to this, “I will not be denied!”
I decided a long time ago to never speak of problems because in my mind a problem is a cement wall and the word problem creates feelings of defeat or negativity. Instead I use the word challenge. What solution-oriented person doesn’t relish a challenge? A challenge is to be met head on and to be overcome. In my mind a challenge means the potential for a victory is eminent.
If you were in a meeting of the minds and a certain individual kept using phrases such as, “I wish we could bring our over all sales volume up by 60%.” What would your intuition tell you about that particular person’s mindset? Do you suspect abundance and belief or lack and fear? Suppose that same individual began speaking phrases such as, “ I am confident that we will increase our over all sales volume by 60%.” Do you believe him? Of course you do!
I’m famous for telling my clients that I don’t “help” you. I will assist you and then you have to help yourself. I will assist my clients with moving forward and growing but they must be willing to accept that assistance and advice. In other words…they must help themselves to move forward and grow through my assistance. The word, assist is the result of an empowering thought. Helping people creates dependency however assisting people creates independence and self-reliance.
Need is the most over used and disempowering word spoken by the masses. When I first begin coaching with a client or group, I listen carefully to their language. Need is a word, that when counted, is used ten to twenty five times in a single, one hour consultation! Why is this important to mention? Because, when I hear the word need spoken that many times, I know where that person or group is coming from. Is need a word of prosperity or lack? Is need a word of faith or fear? Bingo! Listen to the language and recognize the thought, which formed the word and now…look at the results “needing” created.
The key is to need nothing and to know that you deserve everything! Master the art of language and master your world!
